Turner joins Dayton NAACP to support voting rights

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Congressman Mike Turner and Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward spoke about the importance of the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014 Tuesday morning.

“The voting rights act not only ensures equal access and non discrimination in access to voting but it also provides even more importantly the confidence that people have that their will be valued and their access to a vote will not be impeded,” said Congressman Mike Turner, who cosponsor of the bill.

The bill is currently pending before Congress. The panel of supporters said the Senate held hearings on the bill last week. They are asking the House to do the same.

“We just need to make certain, the urgency is of now to pass this 2014 voting rights act swiftly,” said Foward, “anytime anybody wants to assassinate someone’s ability to vote, the NAACP will be here to knock at your door.”

Foward said over the past several years there have been many voter suppression laws trying to work their way through Congress.
