Dragons sweep Bowling Green; streak at 6

Bowling Green, KY – Jose Ortiz and Carlton Daal belted home runs to lead the Dayton Dragons to an 8-3 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Sunday afternoon. The win was the Dragons sixth straight and gave them their second straight sweep of a three-game series.

The Dragons jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Jon Matthews doubled off the left field fence and Ortiz followed with a two-run home run to left. Ortiz’s first homer of the year made it 2-0.

After Bowling Green answered with one run in the bottom of the second, Daal connected on his first professional career home run in the third, a shot to left field, that made it 3-1. Bowling Green again responded with one run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-2.

The Dragons pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 5-2. After Bowling Green scored one run in the bottom of the fifth, the Dragons broke the game open with three in the eighth, keyed by a two-run triple by Jamodrick McGruder to make it 8-3 and close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Dan Langfield worked the first four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and six strikeouts before reaching his pitch limit. Tony Amezcua replaced Langfield to start the fifth and worked three innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked no one and struck out four. Amezcua (2-2) was credited with the win. Zack Weiss tossed the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.

The Dragons collected nine hits. Matthews was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. He is now batting .351 for the year. McGruder also had two hits and a walk. Daal’s home run extended his hitting streak to eight straight games.

The Dragons have outscored their opponents 38-11 over their six-game winning streak.

The Dragons (9-8) do not play on Monday. Their next home game is Tuesday, July 8 vs. the South Bend Silver Hawks at Fifth Third Field. Nick Travieso (7-4, 3.46) will start for the Dragons. South Bend (12-5) will enter the series with a nine-game winning streak.

Notes: Tanner Rahier and Phillip Ervin were given the day off by Dragons manager Jose Nieves.   Rahier has a 12-game hitting streak, the longest of the year by a Dayton player…Entering Sunday’s game, the Dragons did not have a home run during their winning streak. They connected on two on Sunday to give them the early lead…The Dragons are batting .295 with a team ERA of 1.50 during their winning streak (all games in July)…Daal leads the team in hits during the winning streak with 10 and Rahier leads in RBI with six.
