SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – A kayaker reported missing by a friend early Monday was found several hours later, walking along U.S. 68.

Champaign County Sheriff’s Deputies say Daryl Stanforth went kayaking along the Mad River near Urbana around 4 p.m. Sunday. He made arrangements for a friend to pick him up later that night.

That didn’t happen and after several hours passed with no word from Stanforth, the friend called 9-1-1.

Crews from Champaign and Clark Counties spent the night searching up and down the river for any sign of Stanforth or his kayak.

Around 3 a.m. Monday, he was spotted walking along U.S. 68. Stanforth told deputies his friend never came to pick him up. Deputies say it’s clear there was a miscommunication.

They also say Stanforth’s cell phone was apparently not working properly.

Stanforth was reportedly complaining of chest pains when deputies found him. He was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.
