DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The man convicted of beating a woman in a Walmart parking lot will spend eight years in prison.
Dionte English was sentenced in Montgomery County courts Wednesday morning.
He attacked Dora Hemp in April at the Butler Township store. She was holding her 3-year-old granddaughter at the time.
Prosecutors say English admitted that he was high at the time of the attack.
He pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and felonious assault charges earlier this month.
2 NEWS was first to speak with Hemp following the attack.
“All I can remember is him saying he wanted the keys to my car and then he wanted my purse and I told him no. And, he just started hitting me in my face,” said Hemp.
The toddler was not hurt.
English gave an apology before the judge sentenced him in which he said, “First and foremost I just want to sincerely apologize to the victim. I want them to know that I never never in a million years would have done what I don’t if I wasn’t under the influence.”
The attacker also asked that his apology letter be sent to his victim, who was not in court on Wednesday.
Hemp however did write a letter to English.
She said, “He should be punished to the full extent of what he has done. I almost died that night.
If those guys did not show up he would have killed me and probably murdered or done something else bad to my granddaughter. He deserves punishment. Sincerely, Dora M. Hemp,” read a woman in the court.
Following the reading of the statement, English responded in kind again apologizing “I’m sincerely sorry and that person is not me. I don’t have any felony record. I’ve never had an history with violence Honestly mad a horrible mistake.”
The judge did recognize English had a fairly minimal past criminal history; however, he still sentenced English with 8 years.
The attacker will also have to pay the woman more than $3,000.
