8-year-old boy gets wish to race NASCAR idol

CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN)– A young boy from Kettering will soon meet his favorite NASCAR driver, thanks to a local donut shop and it’s generous customers.

Eight year old Gavin Debord said he loves playing soccer and basketball, but most of all– he loves to watch Nascar.

“Gavin is right there with me anytime I watch a race. He’s the only little kid I know who will sit there through a whole race,” said Gavin’s father, Kendall Debord.

After being diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, Gavin has spent most of his days in and out of the hospital.

Sunday, his trip to Bill’s Donut Shop in Centerville, took a sweet turn.

David Seyer, the Executive Director for Special Wish Foundation said their very first wish came from Bill’s Donuts 30 years ago.

Gavin’s wish was to meet and race Go-Karts against Dale Earnhardt Junior in North Carolina.

Thanks to Bill’s Donut Shop, and it’s customers, they’ve collected the donations to help Gavin reach the finish line.

When the Special Wish Foundation called Earnhardt to make the request– he said yes immediately.

“It means something that someone at that level can recognize what these kids go through everyday and try to help out,” said Gavin’s father.

Along with the race, the Debord family will get to go to the Nascar Hall of Fame.
