Centerville, Ohio (WDTN) — Take a good look at the guns in the picture.
Which gun do you think shoots bullets and which one shoots pellets?
“It’s actually fractions of a second you have to determine a shoot don’t shoot situation,” says Peabody’s gun store owner John Thyne.
Thyne put the gun investigators say John Crawford II had side by side when police shot him inside Walmart Wednesday with one that shoots bullets.
Thyne says even for him, a gun expert, at a distance it would be tough to see which gun was which.
“You can’t tell the difference between the two guns unless you’re right up on them,” Thyne says. “You know the functionality of the guns.”
He says even trained officers would have a tough time as well identifying the guns.
“It’s easily very difficult for any law enforcement officer to determine the difference between the two guns,” Thyne says.
So have you figured out which gun is which?
The one on the right side in the picture is the MK-177 BB-Pellet rifle that Crawford had.
“The chamber is very small when you pull a bullet back so you can see it’s strictly for pellets,” Thyne says.
The other one is an AR-15 style rifle.
Peabody says another type of gun known as a SCAR that he doesn’t have in stock looks even more similar to the MK-177 rifle.
Crawford’s girlfriend says he didn’t walk into the store with a gun.
But we found that you could get the MK-177 out of the box in a matter of seconds.
Investigators haven’t confirmed yet if that’s what Crawford did.
