While he recovers from smoke inhalation, a family friend is calling him a hero.

Fire broke out just before 2 a.m. Friday morning at a home on Ray Road off US 503 in West Alexandria.  Fire investigators believe a candle started the fire.

Operator: 911 what’s your emergency?

911 Caller: Our house is on fire.

The man who called 911 identified himself as Brandon to dispatchers. He knew he only had seconds to get himself, a woman and three children to safety.

Investigators say Brandon managed to do just that before collapsing in the front yard.

“That’s a true hero in my book, buddy. I got two kids of my own and I would have done the same thing. 20 That is a true hero. He’s putting his life on the line in order to save the children,” said the family friend.

The friend, Jeff, didn’t want his face on camera, but he says he saw smoke flying in the air around 3 a.m. about an hour after the fire started.

“I rolled past here and seen it was their house. Honestly I was devastated. When I came though here all I seen was fire trucks ambulances and cops everywhere.

Jeff says he will make himself available for a family that could have lost it all.

“Try to help out as much as i can with Clothes , donations anything. I pray or a quick recovery for the gentleman. Honestly, just glad everybody’s ok.

Several puppies were saved at the fire scene as well. They were covered in debris, but are fine otherwise.

The house did not have working smoke detectors.
