DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash involving an off duty police officer.

Investigators say the officer, Sgt. Gary Lowe, was riding along Germantown Street Saturday night when a pickup truck turned into his path at Conners Street.

Sgt Lowe’s passenger, Rhonda Boyer, 52, of Farmersville, was killed.

The pickup driver fled the crash scene, but police say witnesses helped track him down Sunday.

Jeremy Hawks, 43, is now in the Montgomery County Jail.  He faces charges of felony hit-and-run.

Sgt. Lowe is hospitalized, but is expected to recover.

Investigators say it is never easy to investigate a crash when a co-worker is involved.

“When you do recognize the person, it certainly makes it harder to deal with, but everyone knows what their job is and they get it done,” said Sgt. Aaron Fraley, Dayton Police Department Traffic Services Division.
