TROY, Ohio (WDTN) – The Miami County Board of Elections says the names on a petition to put a referendum on the ballot about fire jobs are valid.

The board checked more than 1,500 signatures gathered from people who want Troy firefighters and EMTs to remain full time jobs.

The city says it is currently considering supplementing the force with part-time positions.

Fire Chief Chris Boehringer planned to hire 24 new part-timers, but that has since been reduced to two.

Many critics 2 NEWS spoke with in June believe part-time employees would not provide the same protection as a full-time staff.

The Board of Elections certified that the signatures are all registered voters, so the referendum can be put on a ballot for voters to decide.

The board is set to certify the petition Thursday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
