Kettering Bagel Cafe closes week after health violations

KETTERING, Ohio (WDTN) – The Bagel Cafe on Far Hills Avenue in Kettering closed down quietly this week.

The closing comes a week after health inspectors ordered owners to repair or replace a refrigeration unit that did not keep food cold enough.

2 NEWS checked with Public Health Friday afternoon.  Public Information Officer Bill Wharton says the closing is not connected to the violations.

Public health records show that inspectors ordered that the restaurant close if repairs were not made.  The records show that the problem with the unit was first discovered in early June.

Inspectors worked with owners to comply, but as of the latest inspection notice on August 20, the problem was not fixed. In the August report, inspectors said the employees were keeping the food iced down during the day, but they ordered that the icing was not a permanent fix.

The report says, “Mechanical refrigeration is needed immediately to remain in operation.”

Owner Chris Schlorman wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook on August 27 that due to “outstanding issues”, he was forced to close the store.
