Plane makes emergency landing in bean field

CHAMPAIGN CO., Ohio (WDTN) – A small plane made an emergency landing in Clark County Friday afternoon.

The pilot landed in a bean field near Prairie and County Line roads around 2:50.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the pilot,  50-year-old Thomas Pumpelly of Dayton and his passenger, 78-year-old Ernest Grant of Ellijay of Georgia were not injured in the incident.

Pumpelly said he was forced to land after mechanical problems stopped the engine mid-flight as he was flying from Urbana’s Grimes Field in Champaign County to the Moraine Airport in Montgomery County.

The plane, a single engine1975 Piper Cherokee Six sustained no visible damage.

The FAA will be investigating the cause of engine failure and subsequent forced landing.
