DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A wedding guest is behind bars after police said he tried to make off with a couple’s gifts.

Noah Howard, 29, was arrested on theft charges.

Officers were called to the Webster Street Top of the Market after 12 a.m. Sunday after an employee reported that all of the day’s receipts from the market were taken from the safe and the bride and groom’s wedding gifts were missing.

According to police, Howard filled a black tuxedo garment bag with receipts from the business as well as cards filled with money from the wedding reception valued at more than $6,800.

Police recovered the garment bag outside in some bushes next to the market entrance.

Howard told police he had set his garment bag outside because he didn’t want to forget it. He said he then went back into the market to celebrate with the bridal party. When officers asked him how all of the unopened wedding cards ended up in his garment bag, he told them he didn’t know and said it must have been one of the market employees that did it.

Police then reviewed surveillance footage, which they said showed Howard with the garment bag.

Howard was booked into jail.

The money was counted and returned to the business. The wedding cards were returned to the bride and groom.
