Girl Scout enrollment is down

Girl Scout enrollment numbers are down both nationally and locally

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Enrollment numbers are down both nationally and locally according to the Director of Regional Services with Girls Scouts of Western Ohio, Darlene Langhout.

“There’s been a slight decline, but girls have had significant changes to their lifestyles and adults as well,” said Langhout.

Langhout said the organization is offering more programs with a focus in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in hopes of getting those number up.

Diane Kinney said she has been a scout leader for 17 years. Kinney was a girl scout when she was a child.

“I think it’s sad. You look at the national push right now. It’s to get children outside away from those electronics they watch day in and day out,” said Kinney.

2 NEWS also spoke with the Director of Development and Marketing of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, Marcia Dowds. We requested enrollment numbers from the past 3 years. We haven’t gotten those numbers yet but will pass then along when we do.
