Defense rests in Stargell murder trial

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A murder suspect took the stand in his own defense Monday.

Anthony Stargell is on trial for the murder of a local businessman.

Tommy Nickels was killed in his electric business in April 2012. The business was then set on fire.

Investigators believe it was set on fire to hide the crime.

The defense rested their case around 2:00 p.m.
Stargell told the jury he thought Nickles was reaching for a gun right before he allegedly shot Nickles twice in the head.

“The dog walked in. I fired you know? I panicked. I wasn’t intending on hurting nobody. I wasn’t intending on killing no animals. I wasn’t intending on doing none of that,” Stargell said.

Stargell is also accused of shooting a dog who was inside the building when Nickles died.
