DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton police say they had to use a Taser on a suspect who assaulted an officer and resisted arrest.

Officers responded to the Chase bank on East Third Street around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after witnesses reported that a man was trying to break into the ATM with a crowbar.

Police say when they arrived, the suspect was still trying to pry that ATM open.

The suspect took off running and officers chased him for a couple of blocks. When they tried to arrest him, they say he assaulted one of the officers. That’s when police used the Taser on him.

“They did what they had to do in this incident. In my viewpoint, the individual is alive and going to receive treatment at a hospital… and he will be just fine,” said Sgt. Mark Ponichtera.

Jack Skapik, 27, has been booked into the Montgomery County Jail on preliminary charges of assault, vandalism, safecracking, resisting arrest and possessing criminal tools.
