Barrett is Big Ten’s best this week

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett was named the Big Ten Conference’s offensive player of the week and its freshman of the week after throwing for 312 yards and a school-record tying six touchdowns in leading Ohio State to a 66-0 win over Kent State Saturday at Ohio Stadium.

Barrett, from Wichita Falls, Texas, threw for 297 yards and five touchdowns in the first half while directing the Buckeyes to a 45-0 lead. He played just one series in the second half and finished his day 23-of-30 passing for 312 yards with six touchdowns and one interception, a pass that was bobbled by a receiver at the goal.

Barrett ties Kenny Guiton’s one-year-old school record (2013 vs. Florida A&M) for touchdown passes. He became the first Ohio State quarterback to officially throw for more than 300 yards in a game since Troy Smith passed for 316 yards in a 2006 win over Michigan, a span of 95 games.

Barrett is currently second in the Big Ten Conference and 16th nationally in passing efficiency with a rating of 172.0. He is averaging 252.3 passing yards per game, 294.3 yards of total offense per game and he is tied for the Big Ten lead with nine touchdown passes.

The Big Ten honors this week represent Barrett’s second freshman of the week accolade and his first offensive player of the week honor. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
