DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Drivers on Interstate 75 should expect new traffic patterns along with ramp/lane closures for the remainder of the week.
Mandi Dillon, with the Ohio Department of Transportation, says the construction project has been needed for decades.
“It’s roughly 50 years old and it’s definitely in need of some improvement,” Dillon said.
In its current state — north and southbound lanes are sharing the same section of road. The stretch of road that will be impacted by construction is from US-35 to Main Street.
According to the ODOT, the three-phase construction project on Interstate 75 has cost roughly $306 million. The current, and last, phase of the project has an estimated cost of $126 million. ODOT officials say the project is two months ahead of schedule.
If you plan to drive on the interstate — be aware — there will be new traffic patterns each day from Tuesday through Saturday.
“This is a very exciting project. It’s something that people who are familiar with the Dayton area have been very patient with for quite some time.”
Dillon is asking drivers to exercise more patience with the new traffic pattern. It’s a pattern that will begin with a single lane closure tomorrow starting at 8pm. From 11pm to 5 am — the highway will shut down two lanes, with the possibility of a brief total closure of the highway going southbound.
“We try to remind people that orange cones also equal progress and improvement. The end result is going to be great. You’re going to have three continuous lanes. You’re going to have smoother pavement to ride on. If you bare with us, it’s going to be a really nice section of the interstate,” Dillon added.
