LEBANON – A jury in Warren County has recommended sentence of death for 19-year-old Austin Myers.

Myers was convicted of killing 18-year-old Justin Back during a burglary in January at Back’s Wayne Township home.

Authorities later found Back’s body in Preble County.

Myers told the court he was sorry and said he wished he could go back in time.

“All I’m asking you for is a chance for me to become a better person,” Myers said. “If you kill me, it won’t fix anything. It won’t bring Justin back. If you choose for me to die it will only cause more pain and suffering. It won’t hurt me; I won’t feel anything. It will hurt more innocent people.”

Justin’s parents call today’s decision “bitter sweet.”

“We will never be able to see him see his full potential as a sailor, husband and father,” said Justin’s mother, Sandra Cates. “Justin’s family doesn’t have the opportunity for a phone call or letter. Nothing will bring Justin home but we feel that justice has been served.”

If the jury’s recommendation is ultimately approved by the judge, Myers would become the youngest person on death row in the state of Ohio.

Formal sentencing is set for next week.
