Prevent breast cancer with good oral hygiene

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – There are several recommendations in the breast cancer battle. One is age old, but little known. In fact, it’s as simple as keeping your appointment with a dentist.

Obstetrician/gynecologist Rosalind Jackson says the connection between breast cancer and oral hygiene is the inflammation. Bacteria can build in your gums and you can get periodontal disease or cavities in the bone of your tooth and that’s where infection can start and spread.

Studies show women with poor oral hygiene are at greater risk for breast cancer.

When her patients come to her for an appointment she asks them when they were last at the dentist’s office. Dentists, she says are often the first line of defense against many diseases. They can tell by the changes in the mouth if any other disorder is taking place. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
