PRETORIA, South Africa (AP/WDTN) — Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison for killing his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day 2013.
The judge in a South African court read the sentence Tuesday, also giving Pistorius a 3-year-suspended sentenced for a firearms violation.
The judge last month acquitted Pistorius of murder, but found him guilty of culpable homicide, or negligent killing, in repeatedly shooting girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door.
Pistorius had argued that he fired the gun thinking someone had broken into his home.
Prosecutors had ask for a minimum sentence of ten years.
Pistorius was led away from the courtroom immediately after the sentence was handed down.
