First look inside new Miami Valley Costco

CENTERVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — Like the giant teddy bear in the room, it can be hard to avoid talk about the impact of the Miami Valley’s first Costco.

But those with Costco hope just like their 93 inch tall Teddy Bears shoppers will find the store easy to embrace.

“We’ve had great response from area employers, people who have shopped at Costco in other areas, and a lot of people who haven’t shopped at Costco and have a lot of questions and are anxious to take a look,” says General Manager Tim Borsvold.

So what’s made Costco such a coveted store that there’s a Facebook page counting down to its opening?

“A lot of it is the prices,” Borsvold says. “We provide good values for our members.”

We got a first look at what the store has to offer.

Everything from a pharmacy to fill your prescriptions to gifts to fill your stockings.

“We term it as a treasure hunt,” Borsvold says. “You never quite know what you’re going to find here.”

Normally to get inside you have to be a member. The store has been selling a few hundred memberships a day. But it will be more lenient at first.

“Initially we’ll let people come in and take a look,” Borsvold says. “We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from people, ‘I want to take a look before I buy a membership.'”

Costco isn’t just a draw for shoppers but for other businesses.

Developers are expecting more announcements soon of stores locating nearby.

“Most businesses what they need is foot traffic,” Borsvold says. “That’s what Costco provides.”

We checked on Costco’s hiring. They ended with 195 workers out of about 7,000 applicants.

The store’s grand opening is Thursday morning.
