COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Military officials say a soldier from central Ohio has been killed while serving in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense said in Wednesday evening statement that 27-year-old Army Spc. Joseph W. Riley of Grove City died Monday in Kabul of wounds suffered when an enemy attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Riley was assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Riley’s family has said in a statement that he “loved the Army and felt strongly that freedom is worth the fight.”

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Riley was a 2005 graduate and former football standout at Grove City High School. The city’s police chief says Riley had spent summers on a Grove City work crew.
