Spartanburg South Carolina (WDTN) The Wright State men’s basketball team led by five late, only to see Cal State Fullerton close the game with an 11-1 run over the final 2:31 as the Titans pulled out a 67-62 decision Thursday at the Spartanburg Marriott Upstate Classic.
Fullerton opened the scoring with a three before WSU answered with a 10-0 run, highlighted by threes from Reggie Arceneaux and Steven Davis. The Raiders later extended the lead to 24-11 at the 9:15 mark on five straight Arceneaux points, including another three.
The Titans closed to with three twice down the stretch in the first half before a Roderick Davis basket gave Wright State a 33-28 halftime advantage.
WSU hit 12 of 24 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including four of 10 from behind the arc, while Fullerton shot 35 percent from the floor overall and was just two of eight from three. The Titans, though, were 10 of 11 at the foul line compared to five of eight for the Raiders.
The Titans regained the lead at 39-38 on an Alex Harris jumper with 13:34 to play and eventually went up 50-45 as Josh Gentry hit a jumper in the paint at the 8:36 mark.
Back came Wright State, though, as the Raiders went on a 16-6 run over the next six minutes, 10 of those points by JT Yoho, to take a 61-56 lead.
It was all Fullerton from there, however, as the Titans scored the next nine points to go in front for good. Joe Thomasson hit one of two foul shots at the 3.4-second mark to cut the deficit to three, but WSU would get no closer as Lanerryl Johnson’s two free throws at the 2.3-second mark closed out the game.
Fullerton shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half to finish at 44 percent overall and made 14 of 22 free throws to end the game at 24 of 33 altogether while the Raiders shot 27 percent the final 20 minutes and were 11 of 14 at the line to end up at 16 of 22. The Titans led 30-18 in points in the paint and 10-3 in second-chance points.
Yoho led Wright State with 20 points and nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds as he had 13 points and seven boards in the second half. Arceneaux added 15 points, all in the first half, while Steven Davis had 10 off the bench, seven after halftime.
Johnson paced all scorers with 27 for Cal State Fullerton (2-3), 19 coming in the second half, while Gentry had 14 off the bench and Harris chipped in 10.
