DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — One man’s trash could soon be some thieves treasure.
We drove around several Miami Valley neighborhoods.
We found that while many are able to fit all their holiday trash into their bins by the curb.. others left them overflowing.
The boxes make it easy to spot what’s waiting inside a home.
“When you put your boxes on the curb there’s no better way to advertise you have expensive items in your house,” says Dayton Det. Keith Coberly.
So what should you do with those boxes?
“I would try to break them down or if you can squeeze it into the container, Coberly says.
Police also have a way to protect your new gifts if they do get stolen.
Known as Operation Identification, it uses ultraviolet pens to mark items so if they’re found they can be returned to you or you can just make sure to write down the serial numbers of your big ticket items.
“Your detectives have the ability to trace those serial numbers and we can get a lot of the property back based on those serial numbers,” Coberly says.
One other thing to keep in mind is because of the holidays, trash pickups are often delayed so your boxes might be out there longer than normal.
