Mom accused of leaving baby on Ohio porch

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested the mother of a missing 14-month-old Maryland boy and are conducting a recovery effort after an extensive search failed to find him.

Officers spent Tuesday searching near a creek along with a dive team and helicopter after his mother admitted she left him on the front porch of a stranger’s home in Columbus days ago.

Police say Dainesha Stevens told investigators that she and a male acquaintance could no longer care for him. Authorities say the boy’s 6-year-old sister, who Stevens originally reported missing, was found at a home on the city’s west side and is in good condition.

Stevens is in custody charged with child endangerment and evidence tampering. The man, who police aren’t identifying, has been jailed on unrelated warrants. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
