CINCINNATI, Ohio (WDTN) – Officials in Cincinnati have reopened I-75 southbound less than 24 hours after a construction worker died in the collapse of an overpass.
Brandon Carl, 35, of Kentucky was killed at the construction site to demolish the Hopple Street Bridge late Monday night.
A semi driver who was injured by falling debris is hospitalized at University Hospital.
Investigators say an airbag device was used to free the victims around 2:45 a.m. Tuesday.
An Ohio Department of Transportation spokesperson says it will take some time to investigate why the bridge collapsed onto the southbound lanes. ODOT’s Acting Deputy Director Gary Middleton says once the debris is cleared away, repairs must be made to the highway before it is re-opened to traffic.
That stretch of highway sees about 200,000 vehicles pass through it every day.
