WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The West Carrollton Barber Shop is all abuzz. After 50 years of clipping, trimming, and buzzing Joe Lucas is hanging up his scissors.
“You work 50 years to get to this point and now it’s just time to enjoy it,” said longtime barber Joe Lucas. “You know when it’s time. And time has come.”
It was January 1965 when he first started cutting hair at West Carrollton Barbers.
Over the years, Joe has had a lot of laughs and has seen a lot of regulars, including longtime customer Michael Early. Michael first sat in Joe’s barber chair when he was just about six years old. He’s been coming back for the past 40 years.
“When we started this neither one of us had gray hair did we Michael,” admitted Joe.
Joe remembers giving Michael a fresh haircut when he made an appearance in the paper for the Special Olympics.
“That was still the funniest one Michael. That day when I cut your hair that day and you were going to the Special Olympics,” said Joe.
Michael visited the shop one more time on Joe’s last day.
“Well Michael your whole haircut has managed to be on TV,” said Joe.
Joe says it’s customers like Michael that have helped him make a lifetime of memories, but he’s ready say good-bye.
“It’s kind of humbling that all of these people remember you, and that they want to wish you well in the future,” said Joe.
Joe says since he’s made the decision to retire he has no regrets. He says he’s looking forward to not having a schedule and traveling with his wife.
