CINCINNATI (AP) – The contractor for a highway construction project where a worker was killed when an overpass collapsed says changes to its overpass demolition plan were made hours before the collapse in Cincinnati.

A statement from Kokosing Construction says the plan changed after beams supporting the overpass lifted during demolition Jan. 18 and the crew didn’t want to proceed until checking with the professional engineer. The company says that check was made Jan. 19, and changes were made that afternoon to address the beam uplift it describes as not uncommon.

Kokosing says the crew installed anchors to tie down the beams. The collapse occurred around 10:30 that night.

The company said in a statement Friday that it continues to cooperate with state and federal investigators to determine what caused the collapse. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
