UD to honor Martin Sheen with degree

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The University of Dayton announced actor Martin Sheen will receive an honorary degree for his humanitarian efforts.

The actor is a Dayton native and is best known for his roles in “Apocalypse Now” and NBC’s “The West Wing.”

Sheen grew up on Brown Street and graduated from Chaminade High School.

The university said Sheen is being honored for “his lifelong commitment to peace, social justice and human rights.” He will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters from the university and will also speak at commencement.

In a news release the school said, “his humanitarian work exemplifies the University of Dayton’s Catholic, Marianist mission of leading through service to others.”

The University of Dayton commencement will be held on May 3.
