SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – The Yellow Springs School District calls it great news.
The district confirms that the Ohio Department of Education granted its waiver to opt out of state testing requirements.
The Springfield City Schools and the Global Impact Stem Academy were also granted waivers.
The Yellow Springs district superintendent says on its Facebook page that the next step is to comprise a dual application with Springfield for federal waiver approval.
Springfield voted to apply for the waiver at its February board meeting.
Superintendent Dr. David Estrop says the district believes some of the mandated tests are redundant and take away from the children’s learning time in the classroom. The waiver will allow for 50 to 70 percent less testing.
“We are extremely pleased to take a step forward in reducing the amount of state and federal testing, along with having more opportunities to try innovative approaches to improve student performance,” said Dr. David Estrop.
