MANSFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Officials monitoring a standoff in the north-central Ohio city of Mansfield say a man has repeatedly fired at police from his home and hit police vehicles, though no officer injuries were reported.

The Mansfield News Journal reports the confrontation began Monday morning. Police say a gas utility worker who went to the home to conduct a leak test called 911 after the resident came to the door with an assault rifle.

Police say the man fired at officers three times throughout the day, at one point firing about a dozen rounds. As the standoff stretched into evening, authorities turned a fire hose on the home, trying to flush out the 58-year-old man.

Police have tried unsuccessfully to reach his relatives elsewhere and haven’t commented about his possible motives. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
