PHILADELPHIA (WDTN) – The Mayor of Philadelphia MIchael Nutter spoke to reporters Wednesday afternoon about the Amtrak derailment that killed at least seven so far.

Nutter was reluctant to offer any details but said, “We’ve suffered a tragedy in our City. Seven people died which is a rare event.” Nutter also said he couldn’t remember a rail disaster of this type in the last 50 years.

Nutter said he had just returned from a tour of the crash site with both Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey.

During the conference both Senators pledged support for the City of Philadelphia and offered to help as much as they could. Senator Toomey said the scene was, “a horrific and heartbreaking scene.”

Mayor Nutter also said he spoke with President Obama on the phone. Obama expressed his concern and promised help from the Federal level.
