BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio (WDTN) – An Ohio man accused of beating his 5-year-old son with the handle of window blinds is now charged with the boy’s murder.

Anthony Barton, 24, now faces charges of murder and felonious assault on top of child endangering charges already filed.

He is accused of beating Michael Barton, 5, of Bellefontaine. The boy died at a Columbus hospital Wednesday night, two days after his father’s girlfriend called 911 from a home at 1076 Heritage Court to report that Michael was not breathing.  The woman, Skybree Schindler, 33, is charged with obstructing official business.  Investigators say her statements were not consistent with the evidence and appeared to be an attempt to lead the investigation in the wrong direction.

Anthony Barton reportedly told police he beat his son with a plastic wand used to open and close window blinds.  The coroner’s preliminary cause of death is multiple blunt force trauma to the head.

“The death of Michael Glenn Barton, age 5, is senseless and tragic.  This has been a challenging case due to the age of the victim.  There is no way anyone can attempt to make excuses for the end result of what our evidence suggests occurred.  Clearly, Anthony Allen Michael Barton committed a horrible act that resulted in the death of his son.  Our entire community grieves for our loss and hopes that justice is served in this case,” said Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley.

Barton is being held in the Logan County Jail. He is scheduled into court on the murder charge May 26.  Schindler is also being held in jail. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
