SOUTH CHARLESTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Monday a photograph surfaced that got a South Charleston police officer suspended.
2 NEWS received the photo from a tipster. It appears to show the officer asleep on the job. 2 NEWS reached out to the Village of South Charleston’s police chief about the photo but Chief Brian Redish declined to comment on camera, calling it a departmental affair.
Redish said in a statement the photo, “has been an embarrassment. The officer has been suspended and the matter is being looked into.” The photo has since circulated through social media.
Tuesday morning 2 NEWS received a copy of a letter to Officer Michael Shah that says Officer Shah was in a photo that “looks as if you are sleeping in the cruiser.” The letter also states that Shah later admitted to a supervisor and admitted to being asleep. The letter further says the investigation found the offense to be true and Shah will receive a written notice in his file as well as a three-day suspension.
The letter is signed by both the Chief of Police and the City Manager.
The South Charleston Police Department is a small staff. Its web site shows that it has six part-time officers. A sergeant and chief are listed on staff. An auxiliary program employs 12 commissioned officers.
