Whole Foods enters grocery wars; touts organic produce, personal trainer

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — A day ahead of its grand opening, 2 NEWS got a sneak peek inside the Whole Foods on McEwen and Miamisburg-Centerville roads.

Workers say it’s not the run-of the-mill grocery store.

The store offers 45,000 square feet of organic fruits, vegetables, meats, and produce. It also includes a salad bar, sushi stations, wood-fire pizza oven, and even a personal trainer on hand. Whole Foods says the health coach is a first for the store.

Whole Foods says it’s a challenge to compete in an area where there are so many other chain stores to buy groceries, but it says it offers customers a shopping experience they won’t get elsewhere.

The store boasts that the all-natural products — many of them even grown right here in the Miami Valley — will give the store a hand up in the grocery wars.

“You can’t find another store where there are zero artificial ingredients anywhere in the store. So we’re really hoping to kind of raise the bar for all other grocery stores in the area and that there’s a large focus on organic and zero artificial ingredients,” says marketing leader Lauren Romansky.

The store says it’s hired about 170 people, many from the Dayton-region to work in this location.

Instead of the typical ribbon cutting, Whole Foods is set to have a bread-baking ceremony before it opens its doors Wednesday.

There are about 120 Whole Foods worldwide.
