SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WDTN) — Officials are investigating after a boy was hit and killed by a vehicle.
It happened around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday on Springfield Xenia Road.
Ohio State Highway Patrol said a pick-up truck was going south when the driver lost control. The truck went off the road and into the yard where 13-year-old Tyree King was standing. The truck hit the teen and a fire hydrant before stopping.
According to bystanders on scene, the driver, Charles Heard, 71, tried to pull King’s body out from underneath the truck. Ronald Vanhoose told 2 NEWS he tried to stop Heard, and Heard took a swing at him.
“He said he didn’t know what he hit and he didn’t know why the body was underneath his truck,” Vanhoose said.
Crews on scene said Heard was given a field sobriety test. He was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Ohio State Highway Patrol is still investigating to see if alcohol or speed were factors.
