BELLBROOK, Ohio (WDTN) – Open auditions are being held for a new movie filming in the Miami Valley.

“Last at Bat” is based on a novel by Kettering resident Mark Donahue. It centers around the career comeback of fictional MLB player Dylan Michael. The movie is being paid for by crowdfunding.

Donahue says the lead character, Michael, has a lot in common with some of baseball’s best.

“He’s Joey Votto. He’s Mike Trout. He’s one of the greatest players of his era,” Donahue said.

More than 50 were auditioning for the part at Bellbrook High School. Donahue tells 2 NEWS the film crew tried auditioning Hollywood talent more than a year ago, but struck out.

“For some reason we made the assumption that they could fake it,” Donahue added, “And then we took them to the baseball field, and they couldn’t fake it.”

He says the talent produced in the Miami Valley is some of the best he’s seen in his 50 year career.

Filmmakers are seeking baseball players between the ages of eight to 25 to play Dylan at various stages of his life. They’ve already been through Dayton and Cincinnati, and plan to visit eight more cities.

But not all of the actor/athletes were there to win the big role. Gage Connolly says he’s just happy to play the sport that he loves.

“To be better at baseball in general. For people to see my ability to play. I just want to be good at it,” he said.

More than 100 players of all ages are needed to play teammates, opponents, coaches, umpires and extras.

If you’re interested in auditioning — be sure to check the film’s website for more information on casting call dates.

Final casting selections will be made around September 30, 2015.
