OAK ISLAND, N.C. (WNCN) – Frantic 911 calls released Monday morning provided gory details about two separate shark attacks that occurred Sunday on North Carolina’s coast.

The first attack, involving a 12-year-old girl, occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday in Oak Island, about 25 miles southwest of Wilmington.

“We have somebody…shark, a shark attack,” a caller tells a 911 operator Sunday.

A witness, who then took over the phone call with 911 told the dispatcher that the “family is in too much shock” and provided details about the incident.

“There’s a girl whose hand has been bitten off. We need an ambulance right away.”

The 911 operator asks the caller if any of the fingers are completely amputated.

“It looks like her entire hand is gone,” the caller said.

The second attack, involving a 16-year-old boy, was reported less than two hours later about two miles down the beach.

“His arm is gone,” a caller tells the 911 operator. In another call, an emergency official says, “Left arm is completely missing…bite to the left leg…weak pulse.”

New Hanover Regional Medical Center told local media outlets the two young patients were in fair condition after surgery.

Mayor Betty Wallace says the girl lost part of her arm and also suffered a leg injury. Wallace said the teen lost his left arm.

Wallace didn’t immediately respond to messages early Monday seeking details.
