Vandalia Police step up patrols after rash of car break-ins

VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) — Vandalia Police have stepped up patrols following a rash of car break-ins.

Over the weekend, officers responded to nearly a dozen reports of vehicles that had been targeted by thieves in the neighborhoods off Helke and National roads. Police said the suspects smashed the windows to vehicles to steal what was left in plain sight.

“Some items they’re leaving in might be laptops, might be leaving in their purses, ladies leaving their purses in the vehicles, or anything that would certainly be an opportunity that the suspect could take or easily get rid of or utilize,” said Vandalia Lt. Kurt Althouse.

Officers said they don’t have any suspects, but detectives are keeping a closer eye on vehicles and policing the streets more frequently.

“We’re just encouraging the residents make sure they don’t leave things in their vehicle. Prevent yourself from being a victim by making sure your vehicle is secured and you’re moving all your valuables at the end of your day,” said Lt. Althouse.
