Man falls through downtown Dayton sidewalk

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A man fell though a Dayton sidewalk landing in the basement of a Dayton bar.

City officials say the re-bar was old and rusty causing the sidewalk in front of Bingers Bar on Third street and St. Clair to collapse.

Authorities say the man fell several feet early Tuesday morning and suffered only minor injuries.

Dayton’s deputy director of public works Steve Finke says this kind of incident is very rare. Years ago, a concrete truck parked on another sidewalk caused that sidewalk to collapse.

According to officials, the city has designated people to spot sidewalk issues.

“We’re always looking. We got inspectors that look at the sidewalk areas downtown. We also have ambassadors downtown that re there to clean and help people out with directions. But they’re also walking around. They’re looking at sidewalks,” said Finke.

Finke says this is only the second time that he remembers a downtown sidewalk collapsing. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
