Parents sentenced to 10 years in prison for death of girl, 12

CLEVELAND (AP) — A former suburban Cleveland husband and wife have each been sentenced to a decade behind bars for failing to seek medical care for their 12-year-old adopted daughter before she died.

The sentence was handed down Monday against 43-year-old Randy Jones and his 46-year-old wife, Carissa. The couple was convicted last month of permitting child abuse and child endangering charges in the 2013 death of Tia Ann Jones.

The girl died of pneumonia and infection that began with an abscess on her left foot. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide.

Prosecutors argued during their trial that the former Richmond Heights couple ignored their daughter’s special needs, which included autism and attention deficit disorder.

Defense attorneys say they plan to appeal the sentence. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
