DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dayton firefighters say at least 12 people lost their homes after a Monday morning fire.

It happened at the 100 block of Santa Clara Avenue.

Firefighters arrived around 4:30 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the apartment.

Fire officials believe a candle started the fire near a bed.

Everyone inside the four unit apartment building were able to get out safely.

The apartment where the fire originated is a loss. The other three have heavy smoke damage.

The 12 residents are receiving help from the American Red Cross.
