SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say a shoplifting suspect has been hospitalized after he jumped from a Springfield overpass while trying to shirk police.

Police say officers were chasing the man who authorities say was involved in a theft at a Springfield supermarket Sunday night. Police say the man leaped off an overpass onto U.S. 68 in Clark County.

Springfield Sgt. Doug Pergram says the man was conscious and alert, but separated a shoulder and likely suffered broken bones in the jump.

Authorities say the jump is the equivalent of a drop from a two-story building.

The suspect is being treated at Miami Valley Hospital.

A woman was taken into custody in the theft before the man jumped.

Police haven’t released the names of the suspects. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
