VANDALIA, Ohio (WDTN) — A driver has died after flipping his van over Taylorsville Dam and into the river.

It happened in the area of U.S. 40 and Bridgewater Road around 11:30 a.m.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as John Ditmer, 60, of Miamisburg.

Officials said the van lost control and went off the road, down the incline, and into Taylorsville Reservoir.

Police and medics from several departments responded to the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing the accident happen and pulled Ditmer out of the van before responders arrived.

Medics started treating him before CareFlight was called and airlifted him to the hospital. But Ditmer succumbed to his injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Boats were deployed into the water to check the van and make sure there weren’t any other victims.

No word yet on what caused the van to go over the edge and into the river.
