Ohio zoo to take cubs of bear that killed Yellowstone hiker

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A northwest Ohio zoo will take the two cubs of a grizzly bear that killed a hiker in Yellowstone National Park and was euthanized.

The Toledo Zoo already was planning a brown bear exhibit and agreed to take the female cubs.

They’re expected to arrive in Toledo sometime this fall. The zoo’s curator of mammals says the cubs first will be held at a rehabilitation center until the zoo is ready.

Park spokeswoman Amy Bartlett says the mother was killed because it ate part of the Montana hiker’s body and hid the rest, which isn’t normal behavior for a female bear defending its young.

Yellowstone officials concluded the cubs fed on the body, too, but Bartlett says they shouldn’t be a threat at the zoo.
