Dragons open series in South Bend with 7-2 loss

SOUTH BEND, Indiana – South Bend’s David Bote had two hits including a two-run home run to lead the Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The game was the first of a nine-game road trip for the Dragons.

Dragons starting pitcher Junior Morillo (3-8) suffered through a rough start and was charged with the loss. He lasted five innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs with one walk and one strikeout. All seven runs against Morillo came in the first two innings.

Dayton’s Aristides Aquino belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to account for the Dragons first run of the night. The Dragons also scored in the ninth when Paul Kronenfeld raced in from third on a wild pitch. The Dragons finished with only five hits. Aquino and Gavin LaValley each had two.

The Dragons bullpen tossed three scoreless innings. Joe Mantoni worked two innings, allowing three hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Brennan Bernardino pitched one inning, allowing two walks but no hits with a strikeout.

The Dragons (22-28 in the second half; 61-59 overall) battle South Bend (26-24, 55-62) again on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Tyler Mahle (11-6, 2.45) will start for Dayton against South Bend’s Trevor Clifton (5-9, 4.45).

Notes: Dragons starting pitcher Wyatt Strahan has been named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week. He fired seven scoreless innings to earn a victory on Friday against Burlington.
