CLEVELAND (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden will be among the mourners at former Congressman Louis Stokes’ funeral in Cleveland.
The White House said Monday that Biden would attend Tuesday’s funeral of Ohio’s first black congressman. Stokes died last week at age 90 of cancer.
He was first elected to the House in 1968 and served 15 terms. He was one of Ohio’s most respected and influential congressmen, leading a select committee that investigated the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson joined Stokes’ family in paying tribute to the former congressman at a memorial service Monday inside Cleveland City Hall.
Stokes’ funeral at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church is open to the public.
