CROMWELL, Conn. (WTNH) — The Connecticut Better Business Bureau is urging those who are seeking part-time employment during the holiday season to start the job search now.
The BBB says that companies both large and small, will be looking for help in their stores with many retail sales starting after Halloween and will continue until Dec. 31.
Officials suggest that the sooner you apply to these jobs, the better. Waiting close to the holidays will hamper your chances of being hired. Most managers start to receive dozens, if not hundreds of resumes as the holiday shopping rush ensues.
Here are some tips from the Connecticut BBB chapter on how to get hired before the start of the holiday rush.
1. Beware of employment scams
Don’t trust a phone call from someone saying they saw your resume online. Some may ask you to send money upfront to cover the cost of a background check. Legitimate employers will never ask for those.
2. Dress the part
Always dress to impress. It doesn’t hurt to have extra copies of resumes with you.
3. Apply where you shop
That way you know a little bit of what the company is about and what they sell. That will give you an edge over other applicants who don’t shop there.
4. Go social for opportunities
A growing number of employers are using social media to get the word out that they are looking for some extra help.
5. Wow them with research
Check out the company’s website before you go in to your interview. Showing your knowledge of the company tells employers that you have taken time to prepare and learn about their business.
