BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (WDTN) — A community gathers to remember three Bellbrook teens killed in a crash nearly three years ago.
A special celebration of life was held Sunday afternoon at the Greene Town Center in Beavercreek to remember the lives of Sophie Kerrigan, Skylar Kooken and Julianna Hawk. The teen girls were killed in November 2012 in a vehicle accident. The driver of the truck, Jesse Whitaker, lost control and hit a tree.
Family members of the victims said they all loved to dance, which is why they chose to remember them with a Zumba dance party.
“Wonderful turnout every time. People love to come and do it they love to dance, they love to have fun and it’s just a good time to stand back and remember the girls and celebrate their lives,” said Lisa Sikorski, Julianna’s aunt.
Dozens of people danced to pay tribute to the teens as part of the third annual “We dance to remember block party.” The event was free and put together to bring healing to the families and the community.
“This helps. Just to see that people are willing to come out and give part of their Sunday to remember our girls and have a little fun dancing,” said Kelli Kooken, Skylar’s mom. “Virtually, not many people out here know our girls, so that’s heartwarming that they would come out and not even know who they were or us.”
Scholarships and memorials have been set up in honor of the victims. Click on the links below to donate.
