WEST CARROLLTON, Ohio (WDTN) — An old West Carrollton paper mill is coming down.

Demolition of the former Ahlstrom West Carrollton parchment paper mill on South Elm Street began Sunday.

Prior to demolition, crews had to remove asbestos from the 40,000 square foot building.

The five acres of land will then be turned over to the city for redevelopment. The property is located near the old Fraser Paper Mill that closed 14 years ago.

“These properties are very important to the city of West Carrollton,” said Tom Ross, economic development director. “This area is part of our city center and it’s zoned as a P.U.D. (Planned Unit Development), which allows for a lot of options at this location.”

While crews are demolishing the property, the intersection of Elm Street and West Central Avenue will be closed. Drivers will have to take a detour onto Slonaker Drive.

Ahlstrom stopped production at the plant in 2012.  The site has housed a paper mill since 1896.
